Strategic Human Resource Management as an Enabler of Digital Transformation: A Multidisciplinary Conceptual Framework
Main Article Content
Abstract
Digital transformation has fundamentally changed the strategic role of Human Resource Management (HRM), requiring organisations to integrate technology, human capability, organisational culture, and business strategy. This conceptual article examines how Strategic Human Resource Management (SHRM) can enable successful digital transformation by developing digital capabilities, strengthening workforce readiness, supporting data-driven decision-making, and facilitating organisational change. The study adopts a conceptual integrative literature review approach, synthesising established SHRM literature with contemporary research on digital HRM, digital transformation, organisational culture and change management. The analysis identifies four interconnected dimensions through which SHRM contributes to digital transformation: strategic alignment, digital workforce capability, data-driven HR decision-making, and culture and change enablement. Based on these dimensions, the article develops an integrated SHRM–Digital Transformation Framework in which leadership, strategy, workforce capability, organisational culture, data, and change management operate as mutually reinforcing mechanisms. The article contributes a multidisciplinary perspective by positioning SHRM not merely as a support function for technology implementation but as a strategic capability that connects people, processes, technology, and organisational outcomes. Practical and policy implications are proposed for organisations seeking to improve workforce adaptability, innovation, and sustainable digital transformation.
